Water vs. Saline, or Dilute vs. Neutralizer
In the unfortunate event of an acid or base coming in contact with your skin or eyes, always rinse with water. Acids and bases are capable of causing severe “burns” similar to burns produced by heat. These materials act by first dehydrating cellular structures. Then protein structures are destroyed by the action of acid or base which catalyzes the splitting of peptide bonds. Smaller and smaller fragments result, leading to the ultimate disintegration of the tissue. Rinsing with an alkaline liquid will continue the burn before dilution. First-aid consists of diluting the acid to neutralize it.
